Diabetes program appointments and fees
It runs in two parts, and both exist in our diary today rather than being something we would set up if enough people asked.
| Appointment | What it is | Length | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial assessment | One to one with Chloe Trace, before you join a class | 45 minutes | $77.40 |
| Group class | Up to six people, supervised the whole way through | 60 minutes | $20.25 |
The assessment comes first. It establishes what you can currently do and what needs care, so the class can be run at a level that is right for each person in it rather than at an average.
How exercise supports type 2 diabetes management
Exercise changes how your muscles take up glucose, and it does it whether or not you lose weight. That is why it sits in the medical management of type 2 diabetes alongside medication and diet rather than underneath them, and why a program supervised by an exercise physiologist is different from a gym membership: the prescription is the treatment, and the dose matters.
We are not going to promise you a number here. What we will say is that what you can do changes over a program, and that is measured at the start and again as you go.
How do you get a Medicare rebate for the group program?
Through your GP. If you have type 2 diabetes, your GP can refer you for group allied health services under a GP chronic condition management plan, which is a separate referral from the individual one. Ask your GP for a referral for group exercise physiology services and bring it to the assessment.
Your GP decides whether you are eligible and how many sessions you get. We can tell you what happens in the room; only they can write the referral. The Medicare rebate article explains how the item numbers work if you want to read it before your appointment.
